about the author

MaryLamb Lucas

MaryLamb Lucas was born and raised in West Virginia. She migrated to Virginia for college where she met the man she married and had five children, a son and two sets of twin daughters. She is an experienced parent and psychotherapist who has always loved to write. As a child, she was inspired by Little House on the Prairie when her teacher read it to the whole third grade class. MaryLamb began her own version of it at age 8. Her Mother quashed that when she objected to an adjective describing the mother in the book. Within the next year or two, MaryLamb published and distributed a neighborhood newspaper and wrote poetry all before she finished sixth grade.
about the Book

The Trip Of My Life

My memoir, The Trip of My Life, was inspired by the death of my son Trip. He took his own life in 2014. He was 48. Trip was the oldest of five children and my only son. His death stirred up a hornet’s nest of childhood trauma I experienced as the daughter of two narcissistic, alcoholic, and domestically violent parents. The memoir includes these oppressive experiences.

My childhood led me to become a therapist mid-way through my life. I wanted to understand my own pain and hoped I might help others to never feel as bad about themselves as I had. One of my two sisters also became a therapist.
I suspect there are many readers who will identify with having had unloving and hurtful parents. Perhaps my memoir will give them hope that they can heal from their grief and pain and unlearn the negative and limiting beliefs they had absorbed about themselves as children.

Readers will be introduced to Trip, who he was, the story of my grief over his loss, and my professional and personal insights as I struggle to overcome having been the child of my parents.

This is an excerpt from The Trip of My Life:

“I had two sets of younger twin sisters by the time I was three. I believe I had some abandonment issues from losing my mom’s full-time attention at two and then again at three. I resented that they followed me around like ducklings watching everything I did for a time.
