About The Author
About The Author
Stephen Gary
My first book appeared on Amazon in 2024. I called it “My
Formative Years: One to Eighty-One,“ which was my age when I
wrote it. It is 74 pages of memoirs beginning at the age of one. My life
has not been exciting, but to some with an interest in ancient history,
the book elicited a few smiles. I base that conclusion on the response
I got from those who read it.
I did not publish to sell books. As a lawyer with the federal
government, I had made my living by writing, but not for amusement.
The law is not amusing.
When I retired, however, I jotted some essays for fun. Confined to
my home for the pandemic, I wrote with greater diligence and emailed
stories to friends. I solicited comments on the quality of my work and
how I could improve it. I knew their responses were honest because
many were negative.

My Formative Years
One to Eighty-One
When I retired from my career as a federal attorney I no longer required my top secret clearance, but I did need something to do. My first morning in retirement I was checking "Volunteers Wanted" ads when the sidewalk before my house erupted with kids. It was 9 a.m. and they were going to the school across the street. I had always been at work when it opened, but I was seeing them now and was amazed at how joyous and free they were. On impulse I asked the principal if she could use a volunteer, and she appointed me assistant kindergarten teacher.
The kids loved me and I loved them. Observing small children brought back memories of my own childhood, resulting in the first of these essays. That began with my life as a toddler, but a lot had happened since then and I decided to keep writing.
Still Forming
My 82 Years of Steps and Mis-Steps
At eighty-two, Stephen Gary invites readers to journey through a life rich with lessons, laughter, and the unexpected twists of time. In Still Forming: My 82 Years of Steps and Mis-Steps, Gary continues where his first memoir (My Formative Years: One to Eighty-One) left off, chronicling not just the milestones, but the small, honest, and often humorous moments that shape a lifetime.
From frog ponds and fishing trips to courtroom challenges and Caribbean adventures, Gary's reflections capture both the wisdom and whimsy of aging with grace. His candid voice seasoned with wit, humility, and hard-earned insight reminds us that personal growth doesn't end with age; it deepens.
